Susan says, "I have a heart for kids and their families. I am so appreciative that men and women are willing to serve to defend our country and my family in particular. I can't imagine how hard it must be to pick up the pieces of their former lives and move ahead, sometime knowing they will be serving again. Anything I can do to help the process of coming home, excites me. If it combines, families, kids, a ropes course and a few horses thrown in, I'm there." WENDY S. RODRIGUEZ Wendy serves as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserve. She was the Yellow Ribbon coordinator for two battalions servicing 1,000 family members in Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. Responsibilities included establishing and maintaining two-way communication with forward deployed units to ensure timely and accurate information, and resolving issues. She was the official information source for families serving as a conduit between the deployed unit and their families coordinating information, monthly newsletters, meetings, and connectivity with Family Readiness Groups in multiple state locations. Her primary purpose was to serve as liaison providing guidance, assistance and support to the Battalion Commander and subordinates to enhance the well-being of Soldiers and their Families during mobilization and peacetime. In addition she conducted and coordinated Yellow Ribbon Events, deployment briefings for Soldiers and their Families, including benefits and entitlements in relation to active duty status. This included training of staff, volunteers and military personnel. She has extensive experience developing and grooming good working relationships with all military, national, and local supporting agencies and provided updates on the Battalion success stories in theater. She presented at the Warfighter Conference in Vicksburg, Eastern Tennessee Military Assistance Committee, Red Cross, Local Media and Community functions.
Within the twenty-one years of military service, Wendy was deployed three times. Desert Shield/ Storm 1990-91 with the 1185th Transportation Terminal Brigade out of Norfolk, Va. and Wilmington, N.C. She was also sent to support this war in Rotterdam, Holland (the largest port operations in the world). In 2004-2005 she was called to support Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 223rd TC Company as Platoon Leader/ Company Commander serving 160 soldiers responsible for transporting fuel. Her unit was responsible for covering 1.2 million miles, delivering 2.4 million gallons of fuel. In 2007-2008 she was activated to serve as a Battalion Rear Detachment Commander maintaining two way communication for the 478th Engineer Battalion. She worked with and trained soldiers who did not deploy and worked closely with families meeting any needs necessary while their soldier was deployed.
Wendy believes that with their family they can lead by example, serving first and being well adjusted even when facing or dealing with adversity. Families should get a sense that they are cared for by communities and there are resources that will help them transition back to society. They are a family who puts action to their belief and loves that Compass cares about family needs, goals and desires to give families a leg up for a successful future. She believes in the mission of Compass and it’s direct support of families.
From her exposure to the non-profit arena, she also pursued human resource work in corporate environments. Her past ten years have focused on the Human Resources Training and Development arena as a professional consultant and trainer for corporate universities and advisory board membership for non-profits. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, University of Cincinnati, Ohio and Master of Education, Educational Leadership, Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont. Her civic interests have included Advisory Board positions for Children and Parents Together, Compass Retreat Center and the Clermont YMCA; Public Relations and Marketing Chairperson/Director for St. Louis School and Martial Arts America; and numerous coaching positions for children’s and adult therapeutic sports. Laura and her family learned first-hand the challenges that deployments create when her spouse abruptly deployed to Iraq in 2004. During her Master’s program, she was able to concentrate her research on the effects of deployment and the community gaps that exist for returning troops. This is where she crossed paths with founder Lisa Dunster at a local military family support session and linked ideology and passion for Compass Retreat Center in honoring military families for their sacrifices. She summarizes, “Compass enables me to get involved in laying the foundation for grass roots efforts - volunteers striving to implement the mission of Compass – to humbly serve combat Reservists, National Guard members, and their families. We know there is pain, emptiness, and many experience so many sacrifices related to deployments. Offering a retreat environment can afford intentional opportunities to heal and successfully return to one’s ‘nest’ and ‘home, where the heart is’. From there, the families can successfully reintegrate within the larger community with maximum support.”
